Long Duration Balloon
Program (LDB)

On Sunday, November 23, we attended an open house
at the Long Duration Balloon Program near McMurdo.
We received an overview of the program on arrival.
The balloon launch vehicle is in the upper right.
The balloon payloads are assembled in these buildings.
The buildings are portable and built on sleds.
Permanent buildings tend to get buried in ice and snow
over the years.  These are moved and returned yearly.
The balloons fly at an altitude of about 24 miles and
study space.  NASA is involved in the LDB project.
High energy particles, including neutrinos, are a
focus of LDB research.
The balloon launch vehicle was custom built.  The
cab is "backwards" and at the rear of the vehicle.
There are plans to launch 3 balloons this year.
